1. How do I make a public records request?

Public records may be inspected or copies of public records may be obtained by the public at City Hall. All requests must be directed to the public records officer (City Clerk). The city encourages that all requests be made in writing. Requests may be mailed, emailed, faxed, or delivered in person to the city clerk’s office.

City Hall is open 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday, except legal holidays.

2. When does the City Council meet?

City Council workshops are at 6:30 pm on the first Monday of the month. Regular meetings are at 6:30 pm on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Meetings are held at the Law and Justice Center at 401 Homer Street in Sunnyside. Per SMC 2.08, the City Council does not meet the fourth Monday in December.

1. When does the City Council meet?

The City Council meets three times per month at the Law and Justice Center, located at 401 Homer Street in Sunnyside. Workshops are held on the first Monday of each month at 6:30 pm, and regular meetings are held at 6:30 pm on the second and fourth Mondays.

The Mayor is James A. Restucci. He was elected by the City Council in February 2013 and will serve as Mayor through the end of 2013.

1. Where are my property lines?

The best way to locate your property lines is to contact a licensed land surveyor. If your property was previously platted or surveyed, there should be a property pin in the ground at the corners (often a stick of rebar with a cap, but it could be other things). The city has copies of previous plats, but these are for reference only. We are not licensed surveyors and will not locate property lines for you.

2. Do I need a permit for a fence?

In most cases, no permit is required. However, if the fence is more than six feet tall, a permit is required. Fences can be built on the property line, but the height of the fence must be reviewed for compliance within the given zoning district. The rule of thumb is a six-foot-tall fence is allowed in rear and side yards while a four-foot-tall fence is the maximum height in the front yard, except vision triangles where the max height is three feet.

3. If my home or building is destroyed, can it be rebuilt or replaced?

If the use is permitted, it can be rebuilt or replaced at any time with proper building permits. If the use is considered to be a legal non-conforming use, it may be replaced provided it is done with proper building permits within one year from the date it was destroyed . Contact the Planning Division for more specific information.

1. How often will I receive a bill?

We will mail you a bill each month for the previous month's service. You should receive your bill during the first week of each month. If you do not, please contact us at (509) 837-3782. Current bills are due in full by the 20th of each month. In addition to charges for your water and/or sewer service, you will see charges for the ambulance utility fee, stormwater fee, and solid waste (garbage) pick-up if you live in the City of Sunnyside. The City contracts with Yakima Waste Systems for garbage pick-up services. If you have any questions regarding garbage pick-up, call Yakima Waste at (800) 572-9738.

We accept payment by cash, check, money order, and Visa or Mastercard. Also, for your convenience, there is a locked payment drop box located at the east corner of the City Hall building on 9th Street. When using the drop box, please remember to enclose your billing stub along with your payment, or include the name and address of the account you are paying for.

3. What is the policy for turning water off for non-payment?

The City has a strict turn-off policy that is designed to protect responsible customers like you from being burdened with the costs of delinquent customers. Utility accounts must be paid in full by the 20th of each month during office hours. After the 20th, a delinquent notice will be mailed notifying customers that their account is past due. A $10.00 late charge is assessed on past due bills that are paid after the 20th. Payments for past due bills must be received no later than the 10th of the following month during office hours to avoid disconnection. If a customer's water service is disconnected due to non-payment, the account must be paid in full plus a delinquency fee.

3. Will my insurance pay for this?

Most insurance companies will pay your ambulance bill.

4. Why haven't I received an ambulance bill?

Your insurance company will be billed for the ambulance service you received 1-2 weeks after the date of service. Most insurance companies will pay within 90 days from the date they received a claim. After your insurance pays your claim, your second insurance company will be billed, if you have one. You will receive a bill for your ambulance service if your insurance company/companies did not pay 100% of your claim. If you do not have insurance, you will receive a bill within 1-2 weeks after the date of service.

5. What do I do if this is an automobile accident?

Call our office (509-836-6409) and provide us with your automobile insurance information. If you do not have automobile insurance, your medical insurance will be billed for the accident.

6. What if my insurance denies payment?

Call our office (509-836-6409) to set up a monthly payment plan.

7. How do I obtain a copy of my ambulance report or bill?

Come into the office and complete a medical request form, provide identification, and a copy/copies will be provided to you.

All agricultural permits, special permits, and burning regulations may be obtained from the Yakima Clean Air Authority website at www.yakimacleanair.org.

Municipal Court

1. How can I get a copy of my record?

There is a records check form that you need to fill out and sign. You will receive information about cases that are only filed in this court. If you have cases filed in other courts, you will need to contact those courts specifically. There is no charge for this service.

2. I need to pay a ticket to get my license back. How can I do it?

Contact the court office with your ticket number. We can tell you the amount due. As soon as that amount is paid in full (no checks accepted), we can adjudicate your ticket with the Washington Department of Licensing in Olympia. Payments are allowed on these tickets, but we cannot clear your license until the ticket is paid in full.

3. How can I remove charges from my record?

Contact the court administrator for instructions and the necessary forms. Specific guidelines apply.

1. When are visiting hours, and what do I need to bring?

Visiting hours are:

• Sunday, 8:00 am to 10:00 am and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
• Wednesday, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm - special visits (federal inmates only)
• Sunday 10:00 am to 11:00 am

Visitors must bring some form of official ID. Examples include:

2. Where and when can I drop off money?

Money can be dropped off in the reception area Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

3. When can I turn myself in and what do I need to bring?

Court commitments can commit themselves any day of the week between of 6:00 am and 8:00 am. You will need to bring a current valid Washington state drivers license and a copy of the court commitment.

4. How do I make a request for a police report?

If you are requesting a copy of a report prepared by the Sunnyside Police Department with regard to any incident investigated by the Sunnyside Police Department, the following form is to be completed and left with the Sunnyside Police Department. If the chief of police or his designee approves the request, you will be notified by the Sunnyside Police Department to pick up the report at the Police Station. If your request for the report is denied, you will receive a copy of this form with an explanation from the Sunnyside Police Department. The cost of the report is $0.15 per page. Requests will be answered within five days.

5. How do I get a concealed pistol permit?

Concealed pistol permits are issued through the Sunnyside Police Department. You must live within the city limits of Sunnyside. You must apply in person at 401 Homer Street, Sunnyside, WA 98944. If this is an original request, please apply on Wednesdays for fingerprinting.

6. How do I purchase a dog license?

Dog licenses can be obtained at the Sunnyside Police Department.
