Every year, thousands of people are diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma and over 70 other life threatening diseases that can only be treated by healthy marrow from a compatible donor.
The fact is, only 30% of patients find a match in their family. For patients without family donors, transplants from unrelated donors are the only hope. These patients turn to the NMDP’s Be The Match RegistrySM to help find a stranger willing to save their life.
Most people have misconceptions about the donation process based on what they have seen in movies and on television. They believe that if someone needs a transplant, it will be easy to find a matched donor within their own family, and that the donation process is excruciatingly painful! Neither of these is true!
Compatibility depends on a donor and recipient matching one of the thousands of different tissue types found in the human population. The more people on the registry, the greater the chance that any particular patient will find a match and the greater the overall number of patients who can be transplanted. Since tissue types are inherited, patients are more likely to match someone of their own race or ethnicity. Therefore, a diverse donor registry is needed so every patient can find a matched donor
Virtually 100% of donors agree that if given an opportunity they would donate again!
Joining is Easy: You must be between 18 and 60 years of age, be in general good health, complete a registration form and a cheek swab. That’s it!
Be the one to save a life!
The National Marrow Donor Program helps people who need a life-saving marrow or blood cell transplant. We connect patients, doctors, donors and researchers to the resources they need to help more people live longer and healthier lives.
