Reserves
The goal of the Sunnyside Police Reserve unit is to increase community safety by enhancing law enforcement efforts through patrol, investigations, and community involvement efforts.
The reserve unit is comprised of 16 sworn reserve officers. Within this unit are a lieutenant and three sergeants. These volunteers are selected from within the community to establish a community partnership.
Reserve members must undergo intensive training similar to a paid staff member. This unit’s members are entrusted with the same responsibilities as paid staff and are afforded similar on-going training.
Members of the unit are actively involved within the community by providing security during special events, by enhancing the patrol force, and by providing assistance with programs within the community.
The Sunnyside Police Reserve Officer program has been around for many years. Some records indicate that Reserves have been a part of the Sunnyside Police Department since 1904, just two years after the city was founded in 1902. Reserve Officers are volunteers. Reserve Officers have the same powers of arrest and authority that full time officers have.
Reserve Officers must attend the Reserve Police Academy. After completion of the academy Reserve Officers must train with a field training officer or FTO. The FTO will train the reserve officer and complete a field training book. Once the book is complete the Reserve Officer is now on his own. Reserve Officers will have to maintain their training, and attend classes from time to time. Reserve Officers must attend one meeting a month, and volunteer 16 hours minimum to the department.
